The Third-Most Odds-Defying Discovery in Targ's "Prayer and Healing ...

Targ originally chose to study AIDS because it was a "gnarly disease," medical science's greatest riddle.

During the AIDS pilot study, one of the patients developed brain cancer. Amazingly, this patient did not die and eventually made a full recovery. As it turned out, he had been in the treatment group - he had been prayed for. Fred Sicher, Targ's coauthor, reminded her of this patient after a confirmation study was completed. Although AIDS was no longer a death sentence, brain cancer still was.

Could a healer 1,500 miles away really shrink a brain tumor?

Targ learned all she could about a type of brain cancer called glioblastoma multiforme.

In 2000, she applied to the National Institutes of Health's Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine for $1.5 million to cover two 150-patient trials - one on brain cancer, and another confirmation study on AIDS.

Indevus Pharmaceuticals Reports Positive Results Of Phase II ...

Indevus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDEV) announced positive results from its Phase II octreotide implant trial in patients with acromegaly, a disorder characterized by excessive blood levels of growth hormone (GH) and insulin- like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). The implant utilizes the Company's patented Hydron technology to deliver effective levels of octreotide for six months. Octreotide is a synthetic peptide that mimics the natural hormone somatostatin to block release of GH. In the recently completed six-month trial, the octreotide implant effectively suppressed levels of GH and IGF-1 at rates similar to those seen with current FDA approved injectable formulations of octreotide. In addition, the drug was well tolerated.

"I am extremely pleased to report the successful completion of our octreotide implant trial and we are looking forward to the initiation of our Phase III program in the first half of 2008," stated Glenn L.

Law should make a clear distinction

The Adivasis of Assam may not be a homogenous community, uniformly in need of the benefits that will accrue from the ST status. The poorest and most marginalised of them do certainly need a leg up. But when it is a question of limited job placements and seats in schools and colleges, the reservation tussle is a zero-sum game. The Gujjar agitation in Rajasthan is still fresh in memory. Other communities, who may or may not be in the reservations loop themselves, end up feeling threatened, and passions are unleashed. When political interests dominate, conditions only get worse.

All interested parties, including the All Assam Adivasi Students Association (AAASA), not to mention the state government, must share the blame for what is happening. Adivasi retaliation is also taking place, and more lives are being lost in the continued violence.

Definition of Cesarean Section

There are three main types of cesarean operations, each named according the location and direction of the uterine incision:

Low Transverse, a transverse (horizontal) incision in the lower uterus

Low Vertical, a vertical incision in the lower uterus

Classical, a vertical incision in the main body of the uterus

Today, the low transverse incision is used almost exclusively. It has the lowest incidence of hemorrhage during surgery as well as the least chance of rupturing in later pregnancies.

Sometimes, because of fetal size (very large or very small) or position problems (breech or transverse), a low vertical cesarean may be performed.

In the classical operation, a larger vertical incision allows a greater opening; it is used in some emergency situations as well as for fetal size or position problems.

Jeweller, woman go missing from shop

Ladhar, Deputy Commissioner and Collector, Sangrur, has directed Dr Indu, SDM, Malerkotla, and Mr Mukesh Sharma, Naib Tehsildar, local office of the joint sub-registrar, to reject the mutation case in connection with land measuring above 9,500 sq yards recorded under fake khasra number 319/1 and complete the records accordingly.

According to Dr Indu, two months ago Mr Mukesh Sharma had received an anonymous call that Jagdev Singh, patwari, posted at Kup Kalan at that time, had forged the revenue records in connection with the said land. As I was on VIP duty at the time of receiving the telephone call, I deputed Mr Harmesh Kumar, Kanoongo, to investigate the matter. Perusal of the records showed that Jagdev Singh had created a bogus account in connection with the land owned by Ms Inder Devi, widow of Bishambar Ram, read the report submitted to the DC, Sangrur, and SDM, Malerkotla.

WaPo Paints Boy Scouts Anti-Gay, But Not Philadelphia as Anti-Scout

It would be logical to most Americans that having openly gay adults supervising impressionable young boys under the age of consent might be a bad idea, setting aside moral or religious considerations. It would also be logical to most Americans that private organizations reserve every right to set membership standards on moral and/or religious considerations. And to most lay persons, it would seem downright un-American for any American city to evict the Boy Scouts of America, of all organizations, from city-owned property for what amounts to political correctness.

Yet in covering such a story in "Philadelphia Gives Boy Scouts Ultimatum," the Washington Post's Dafna Linzer paints the Scouts as "anti-homosexual" while failing to suggest the city's liberal Democratic politicians are "anti-Boy Scout."
