Reading some of above comments and remembering the tunnel vision position that I use to have, am thankful I finally smartened up. Killer ice storm responsible for 25 deaths in central states coming ...
A winter storm watch is in effect from tomorrow morning through the evening, the National Weather service says. Up to seven inches of freezing rain and snow is expected. The storm should start sometime in the afternoon, so the mourning commute should be fine. Meanwhile in Oklahoma and other hard-hit states where the storm caused at least 25 deaths, mainly on the road, hundreds of thousands of people remained without power. Nearly a half-million homes had no power this morning in Oklahoma. Another 300,000 customers were blacked out in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska. What Thanksgiving means to me, part 2
So here's a second helping of your Thanksgiving thoughts. Memories of a mother and son: A house filled with family Thanksgiving in my memories is all about my mother. It is not because of the food she prepared, though she was a good cook. Her recipes are still among our family favorites. Nor was it because she did anything very special. Yes, the good china came out and the family silver (the only time I saw it throughout the year). It was because of her longing to make it truly a family day. My mother came from a large close-knit Irish family, the middle child of nine. Growing up in a crowded, mining-town household in Pennsylvania, she was accustomed to having many people around. One of my earliest memories is the big round table in my grandfather's kitchen, with eight chairs (10 at a pinch) around it.
Halting the Race to the Bottom
Viewed superficially, we could celebrate our time as a halcyon era of information and discourse. The Internet is a revolutionary tool, which provides the newest basis for such a belief; however, it works not only for but also (and less obviously) against the ideal of an informed and intellectually curious public. It does enable the previously passive and powerless to become actors and interactors in the unfolding drama of public discourse and politics; but, even as it empowers and informs vast numbers of citizens, it also is a tool for misinformation and false attacks, polluting the dialogue with an apparent “knowledge" base undisciplined by traditional standards of accuracy in public communication. Bloggers are their own editors and many make little effort to verify what they post. As an information surplus develops, the absence of accountability combines with an absence of formal checks to make it possible for pseudofacts to spread like wildfire.
