Democrats say NLRB majority anti-union

I don't think I have ever seen a labor board so tilted against working people and more in favor of employers than this board in 28 years," said Rep. Phil Hare, D-Ill., at a joint House-Senate subcommittee hearing on the board's recent decisions.

But board chairman Robert Battista called the complaints the byproducts of the beginning of election season.

"The polemics of certain groups against recent decisions of the board are nothing more than special interest attacks designed to gain support for their position in the coming election cycle," said Battista, who was appointed by President Bush.

Board member Wilma Liebman disagreed, telling lawmakers the deck is stacked against unionized workers at the NLRB.

"Today, fewer workers have fewer rights and weaker remedies under the National Labor Relations Act," said Liebman, who was appointed to the board by President Clinton.

New Guidelines On Non-muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer Released

ScienceDaily (Nov. 15, 2007) — The American Urological Association has prepared a new Guideline on the Management of Nonmuscle Invasive Bladder Cancer for professionals. Each year, more than 60,000 people are diagnosed with bladder cancer, which has been linked to a number of risk factors, including cigarette smoking and exposure to hazardous chemicals. The AUA originally published its guideline in 1999 and the new report is an update to that document.

Dexamethasone in Vietnamese Adolescents and Adults with Bacterial ...

In patients with confirmed bacterial meningitis, however, there was a significant reduction in the risk of death at 1 month (relative risk, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.20 to 0.94) and in the risk of death or disability at 6 months (odds ratio, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.32 to 0.98). These effects were not found in patients with probable bacterial meningitis. Results of multivariate analysis indicated that dexamethasone treatment for patients with probable bacterial meningitis was significantly associated with an increased risk of death at 1 month, an observation that may be explained by cases of tuberculous meningitis in the treatment group.

Conclusions Dexamethasone does not improve the outcome in all adolescents and adults with suspected bacterial meningitis; a beneficial effect appears to be confined to patients with microbiologically proven disease, including those who have received prior treatment with antibiotics.

Discovery of key mechanism underlying idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

The investigators found that a specific molecular pathway appears responsible for key aspects of the scarring of lung tissue that characterizes IPF, the cause of which is currently unknown. The results will appear in the January issue of Nature Medicine and have received early online release.

"Identifying the key role of this pathway in the development of fibrosis gives us an exciting new target for devising treatments," says Andrew Tager, MD, of the MGH Pulmonary and Critical Care Unit, who led the study. "An agent that blocks this pathway is already being developed as a potential cancer treatment, and we're hoping to be able to test it in our animal model of IPF to determine whether it might be a candidate for trials in patients."

About 50,000 new cases of IPF are diagnosed in the U.S.

Rapist Jinxela likely to spend life behind bars

The Johannesburg High Court has labelled serial rapist Mongezi Jinxela a danger who needs to be removed from society for a very long time.

Jinxela was today sentenced to over 1000 years in jail - effectively life in prison - plus an additional 20 years after being convicted on over 200 charges, including 66 of rape.

Over a dozen people crammed into court room 2D, to catch a last glimpse of Jinxela before he begins serving his sentence.

While sitting in the dock, the convicted serial rapist covered his head with his jacket, as Judge George Maluleke informed him of his punishment.

The judge slammed Jinxela for showing no remorse for what he had done.

Maluleke described the 39-year-old as a danger to society and said he had ruined too many young lives.
