The district attorney can help pave the way for that process to begin by dropping these outrageous proceedings against my sister." According to the New Orleans Times Picayune newspaper, other speakers and attendees applauded the doctors and staff who stayed at Memorial hospital saying they literally weathered the storm and took care of patients even though the conditions inside the hospital deteriorated rapidly. They also said she stayed behind while doctors with small children and family to care for fled the oncoming hurricane. Others said the investigation is preventing the city of New Orleans from moving past the disaster. "This investigation has only festered our deep wounds, and we cannot begin the healing process until Dr. Pou is fully exonerated," said Karen Sanford, who said staff at the hospital had to care for 2,000 people during the hurricane.
Knicks' gospel according to Isiah
He passed up an open shot, nearly traveled, dribbled to the free-throw line and missed badly a shot attempt. "I'm trying to be active at the same time knowing it will take a while," George said before the game. "I'm still going to take shots and try to be a threat while I'm out there, but I'm not going to be overly aggressive." When Cuban speaks... Mark Cuban spent about 30 minutes before the game surrounded by New York media members querying the Mavs' owner on topics ranging from Dancing with the Stars to Isiah Thomas' shelf life to Cuban's initial response that the Tim Donaghy gambling saga wouldn't hurt the NBA's image with fans. After the game, Cuban mingled with the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Briefly Eddie Jones has dropped weight as ordered by Avery Johnson, who still wouldn't nail down a return date for the 6-foot-6 shooting guard.
USC climber embraces mission to fight cancer
At a time in their lives when many people are ready to slow down, Upper St. Clair's Laura Willumsen is ready to climb mountains--literally. Willumsen, marketing director for the Pittsburgh Opera, is one of four Pittsburghers participating in Climb for Hope. Climb for Hope's Pittsburgh team was created with the purpose of beating breast cancer by funding innovative vaccine research for late-stage breast cancer. Team Pittsburgh leaves in January to tackle Ecuador's second highest peak, Cotopaxi, which at 19,348 feet is also the world's highest active volcano. Five marketing professionals: Willumsen, Karen Kern, Nick Cobler, Todd Lepley, and Ted Williams; make up Team Pittsburgh, the first regional team for Climb for Hope. Each team member has a personal reason for their participation.
Thermography offers an exam option
When accepted medical procedures seem to be lacking, some people search for another way. That is the case with nurse practitioner Carolyn Walker and pharmacist Sue Horton, who own Thermography of Iowa in Urbandale. Thermography is a computerized infrared imaging they say is a tool for screening breast health. It can be used as a supplement to mammography and it can detect abnormalities in the breast even earlier than mammograms, Walker and Horton say. .
No Christmas, Hanukkah Spirit for Israel Father's Rights Activists ...
Jerusalem-----December 24 ....... It's Christmas Day in Israel - the Holy Land, the warm lights of Hanukkah are now fading and a New Year is just days away. Tis the season to merry, many say. It is the season of family. Of father, mother and children. Or is it? On this Christmas day, on the eight days of Hanukkah how many divorced men were separated from their children by family courts and negligent social workers in Israel, North America and Europe? Dads, who pay child support. Dads who are loving and responsible. Good fathers who as a direct result of gender bias discrimination have been turned from being a full time dad into a "visitor." The State of Israel has not reformed its Knesset Family Custody Act since it was passed into law in 1962. Nor do many social workers in Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jerusalem, Ra'anana, Kfar Sava and Herzliya realize the devastating effects of separating dads from their kids.
Poll finds rift between minorities
I think (people) have to rise to a level of courage that is higher than their assumptions," Williams said. "If I don't engage at all (with people of other races), I can hide behind my assumptions. But (engaging) involves risk, and that is very challenging in a risk-averse society." Already, some groups, such as the East Bay Asian Youth Center, are working to free young people from ethnic isolation. About 40 percent of the participants in their after-school and community programs are Asian, while 35 percent are Latino and 25 percent African Americans, Kim said. They work together on projects and socialize together, and often that has a far-reaching impact. "These are families who live together in the same neighborhood and go to the same schools and work among each other," Kim said.
Hathorn questions Halter's finance reports (UPDATE)
Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Mike Hathorn just sent a letter to his opponent Bill Halter and "cc"d the Arkansas news media via email. He is accusing Halter of campaign finance reporting irregularities: Dear Bill: As you know, I am committed to running a positive campaign focused on the issues of this race. However, after reviewing your campaign financial disclosure reports, I have several serious concerns regarding the financial record keeping of your campaigns. Your public reports raise a number of questions, and seem to indicate that you have violated several provisions of the Arkansas Rules on Campaign Finance and Disclosure. Transparency in Government and the public conduct of those who wish to serve the people as elected officials should be held in high regard.
