Kids Are Worth the Cost

I did it because, to me, Kris Kristofferson was right: Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose. My daughter is now 9 years old. Every Friday night when we snuggle up to watch a movie together, or whenever she turns to me with laughing eyes and says, "Mom, you're crazy, but I still love you," I know I've spent my money wisely.

My life is so much richer with my child than it was without her. Once again, the money I'm losing matters least. If there is one thing I know for certain, it's that she's worth it.

Drinking And Smoking Don't Boost HPV-Related Cancer Risk

Heavy smoking and drinking are known to cause head and neck cancer. Infection with human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16), a common strain of the sexually-transmitted HPV virus, is another known risk factor for head and neck cancer, which affects about 500,000 people each year worldwide.New Brown University research, however, shows that alcohol and tobacco use doesn't further increase the risk of contracting head and neck cancers for people infected with HPV16. This finding, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, is the strongest evidence to date that these major cancers have two distinct causes -- and may represent two distinct classes of cancer -- and would require different prevention and treatment strategies.Karl Kelsey, M.D., a Brown professor of community health and pathology and laboratory medicine and the director of the Center for Environmental Health and Technology, said the research has public health policy implications. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that girls and young women receive the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer -- HPV16 causes about half of all cervical cancer cases -- boys and men cannot get the vaccine.

More one-man 999 crews may put lives at risk

AMBULANCE bosses in Worcestershire plan to introduce more one-man rapid response crews to tackle emergencies - but staff have warned patients could be put at risk.

Liz Kabani, a senior call-taker with the West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, branded the one-man crews a "cheapskate plan".

Yesterday it was announced the trust will get £5 million extra funding next year to improve response times. The cash will buy more rapid response vehicles - manned by a single paramedic - and increase the number of paramedics. The move is needed to meet new Government targets, being introduced on April 1 when the 10 English trusts will be expected to respond to three-quarters of the most serious emergencies within eight minutes of receiving the 999 call.

Obituary: Mayfield and beloved dog participated in hospital program

Having pets convinced William "Bill" Mayfield of the need to help elderly people who couldn't afford emergency treatment for their own animals.

The loss six years ago to cancer of Sir Winston, his beloved Shetland sheepdog, prompted Mayfield and his wife, Linda, to establish the Sir Winston Memorial Fund.

"Bill was passionate about helping elderly people for whom their pets are everything," Linda Mayfield said. "He had a kind heart and he wanted to save people from making the terrible decision of putting down a pet because they can't pay for treatment."

Mayfield, 75, died Monday from complications of pneumonia and cancer.

The retired vice chairman of the Merry X-Ray Corporation, a San Diego, Calif.-based imaging distributor, and his wife settled in San Antonio 13 years ago.

Arius Announces New Findings In Cancer Antibody Programs

ARIUS Research presented new findings from its Trop-2 and CD59 antibody programs. ARIUS scientists will discuss the Company's Trop-2 and CD59 abstracts at the AACR press conference today at 9:30 a.m. PT."Both our Trop-2 and CD59 antibody programs have demonstrated novel approaches in treating cancer. Our Trop-2 antibody is a novel target and has been linked to aggressive cancers in the scientific literature, while our CD59 program has demonstrated the ability to foil a cancer cell's ability to evade the immune system," said Dr. David Young, President and CEO. "These programs, in addition to our CD44 cancer stem cell program, were generated through our proprietary drug discovery technology, FunctionFIRST(TM), which is inherently designed to produce novel antibodies and identify unique cancer targets."Trop-2 Proffered Paper PresentationARIUS' Trop-2 targeting antibody has demonstrated a significant anti-tumor effect in animal models of human pancreatic cancer, inhibiting tumor growth by up to 100 percent.

Book Review

Fisher is among the first to acknowledge using an "abundance" of words and is proud of it; but the problem is not that she doesn't care what she says but that she sometimes cares too much; a problem, if you want to call it that, that apparently led to a serious case of writer's block (helped along by the tragedy of Katrina). The problem didn't unblock and resolve itself until she got going full blast in "Orlans Embrace," turning a brief introduction into what soon became the nexus of a significantly expanded work.

The book is also being celebrated by the internationally distinguished Celtic singer and musician Danny O'Flaherty with a special song. A grand party last Sunday evening in the Vieux Carr at the Caf Amelie, in the Princess of Monaco Courtyard, launched it with signings and the donation of two $5,000 checks for two New Orleans groups dedicated to preservation of the French Quarter.

UPDATE: RICS Survey Shows UK Housing Market Slowdown Deepens

October is the last month we expect lending volumes to be higher than a year ago as lenders and borrowers will behave more cautiously in an uncertain and slowing market environment," Coogan said. The RICS survey showed that new buyer inquiries fell for the 12th straight month in November, while the number of newly agreed sales slowed to the lowest level since records of this measure began in April 1998. "Past interest rate increases combined with a tightening in mortgage lending criteria are preventing many would-be buyers from getting on the housing ladder," the RICS said. Economists expect the MPC to cut interest rates to 5.00% some time next year as economic growth shows signs of slowing under pressure of the recent credit crunch and an expected slowdown in consumer spending and business investment.
