Fashioning technology

Suits that power your iPod; shorts that chill your beer; and dresses that can be programmed to fit perfectly: Rachel Wells explores the brave new world of haute technology.

If you thought Maxwell Smart's shoe phone was a hoot, you ain't seen nothing yet. Exciting progress in the booming, intelligent clothing and textiles industry means mobile-phone shirts (just speak into the collar) and socks that mend themselves could soon be a reality. Meanwhile, iPod-playing suits and clothes that change size and shape to fit the wearer are already here. Such garments are set to become part of our daily wardrobes as advances in smart fabrics mean our clothes will do more than just preserve our modesty, protect us from the elements, or, for some of us, make a fashion statement.

In recent years, smart clothing has progressed significantly from wearable computers - where devices such as MP3 players or mobile phones are seamlessly integrated into clothing - to "intelligent" fabrics and clothes that can conduct electricity, change shape and even colour.

Flat Dysplastic Lesions Identified In Ulcerative Colitis Patients By ...

A pilot study from researchers at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, found that narrow band imaging (NBI) colonoscopy used in cancer surveillance for ulcerative colitis patients can identify flat dysplastic lesions. The research appears in the November issue of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Narrow band imaging (NBI) is a novel illumination technology for endoscopy characterized by light with wavelengths of narrow bands that improves the visibility of capillaries, veins and other subtle tissue structures by optimizing the absorbance and scattering characteristics of light. It enhances vasculature within and beneath the mucosa, or lining, of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Random biopsy has been a recommended procedure for cancer surveillance in patients with ulcerative colitis.

Palmeiro learned of failed test in May

Also, the player can challenge the test with baseball's four-person Health Policy Advisory Committee, made up of a union representative, a baseball representative and two doctors.

If any one of the four decides that the challenge has merit, it is forwarded to a three-person arbitration panel consisting of a baseball lawyer, a union lawyer and an independent arbitrator.

Long-awaited blueprints to guide cancer survivors' future care

A new push is on to provide patients with "survivor plans," long-awaited blueprints for the customized follow-up care they'll require for years.

Few today get that careful send-off as they leave cancer specialists and head back to their regular doctors, even though the Institute of Medicine alerted the nation two years ago that these survivors' special needs weren't being met.

AIDS physician, activist Scott Hitt dies

AIDS physician and political activist R. Scott Hitt died at the age of 49 on Nov. 8, at his home in West Hollywood. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1999 and fought the disease that ultimately took his life.

"Scott was among the first and best rapid responders to AIDS. He took down walls dividing patients from their doctors and from their elected leaders all the way to the White House. In doing so Scott helped spark a revolution in patient advocacy and patient rights which spread beyond HIV/AIDS and far beyond our borders," said Daniel Zingale.

Zingale, a California native, is a senior advisor to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He worked in Washington as a lobbyist for the Human Rights Campaign and as executive director of AIDS Action when Hitt chaired PACHA.

Nicotine output increased every year in every cigarette category over seven years, according to a Harvard analysis of Massachusetts government data. During this period as a whole, nicotine yield from every major tobacco company increased. Tobacco companies' spin: It's random variation, since some individual brands didn't increase. Researchers' rebuttal: When yields from every category and every producer go up, that's not random. Outraged reaction: The nicotine infusion violates the industry's legal agreement to discourage youth smoking. Casual reaction: Who cares, since cigarette sales steadily declined during this period. Google/OpenSocial's director of engineering David Glazer unplugged: 'Shindig is live'

General Software Infrastructure Web technology Video

While at Bebo's launch event yesterday in San Francisco, I had a chance to catch up with David Glazer, the director of engineering at Google who is overseeing the evolution of the OpenSocial framework that the company announced on November 1, 2007. You can see the interview in the attached video (above).

Bebo claims to be the third largest social network in the world behind MySpace and Facebook and also claims to be the most popular social network in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand. Glazer's attendance to the Bebo event was particularly interesting given that one of Bebo's key messages from yesterday's launch was how applications that are written to run on FaceBook will run without any recoding on Bebo.
