PGW has a 'miraculous metamorphosis'
This is a company that is now worth something. It has a lot of debt, but it's worth something." And at the helm almost from the start has been Thomas Knud-sen, PGW president and chief executive, who had been a frequent critic of the company as a consultant working for the public advocate on rate cases. "We were adamant that we would pay the money back," Knudsen said. "This is the first step of the rebuilding of the company's finances." By Dec. 28, the company will shift $20.5 million to the city treasury. Earlier this year, the company paid $2 million back. By next August, Knudsen said the rest of the loan will be paid. In late 2000, PGW was teetering as the cost of natural gas shot up and its bill collections plummeted, Knudsen recalled. The fiscal crisis was so bad that PGW was facing a situation in which it could not pay its own January gas bill.
Tasigna Gains European Approval For Patients With A Life-threatening ...
Tasigna (nilotinib) has received European Union approval as a new anti-cancer therapy for patients with a life-threatening form of leukemia who are resistant or intolerant to prior treatment including Glivec (imatinib). The EU approval was supported by data showing that Tasigna produced a positive response in 49% of patients in the chronic phase of Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Most patients achieved this response within three months of starting Tasigna treatment. "The approval of Tasigna gives us the opportunity to help more CML patients and, with Glivec as our first line agent, provide comprehensive treatment options for prescribers," said David Epstein, President and CEO of Novartis Oncology. "Tasigna drives home our commitment to develop compounds to fulfill unmet medical needs by pursuing indications for patients with limited treatment options." The European Commission decision applies in all 27 EU member states plus Norway and Iceland, and follows recent approvals in the US and Switzerland.

Stem Cell Research: Science and the Future
In the case of leukemias and multiple myeloma, the marrow itself is diseased. The marrow must be cleansed of cancer cells before it can be reintroduced. The advantage of autologous transplants is that the cells come from the patient's own body, so there is no rejection. New methods can sort the different cells in the bone marrow from each other -- similar in principle to the coin-sorting machines found in supermarkets. Clinical studies using blood stem cell purification techniques have found that patients are significantly less likely to have the cancer return and as a consequence live longer lives. An allogeneic transplant uses bone marrow from a different person to treat the cancer. The donor's marrow is removed with a needle, treated, and filtered. Chemotherapy is administered to the patient, and the donor's marrow transplanted.
A majority built on faith
I am just concerned that their environmental ideas would drive business and jobs out of the province. If they mature their ideas about how to implement environmental policies without costing jobs they stand a good chance of getting my vote in future elections. I was on the fence this election. Conservative or Green. Ultimately I voted Conservative knowing full well they would not win. It is never fails to amaze me what bunch of lemmings Canadian voters tend to be.
