New treatment cuts cancer rates

Combining chemotherapy, radiation and surgery tripled the survival of stage III lung cancer patients to 45 percent, say St. Joseph Medical Center doctors, who hope to replicate their success nationwide.

Fighting the cancer with weekly doses of chemotherapy and daily radiation can shrink cancerous tissue to levels that make surgery feasible, said Dr. Mark Krasna, thoracic surgeon and medical director of the Cancer Institute at St. Joseph in Towson.

Combining four successive studies of lung cancer patients, about 120 from the University of Maryland Medical Center and St. Joseph, Krasna said doctors found survival increased 30 to 50 percent, with a a 45 percent survival rate after five years. The compares with an average survival rate of 15 percent nationwide.

Stage III lung cancer typically has invaded the lymph nodes in the chest, complicating surgery, he said.

Researchers Funded to Narrow Search for Genes Causing Diabetes

Dec. 12, 2007 If scientist knew the exact gene that caused high blood sugar in diabetics, it might then be possible to alter that gene to control the glucose level and stop the disease. Scientists at Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research (SFBR) expect to make big leaps in their understanding of genetic influences on diabetes, thanks to a new $1.7 million grant awarded to Dr. Joanne Curran, the grants principal investigator.

The grant from the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases will allow Dr. Curran and her colleagues to conduct a more detailed investigation on 100 genes that previous SFBR studies have shown to play a role in various risk factors for diabetes and other metabolic diseases.

Science Biofuels: Salvation or Crimes Against Humanity?

According to a U.N. expert biofuels represent a crime against mankind. Jean Ziegler, the United Nations special reporter on the right to food and sociology professor at the University of Geneva and the University of the Sorbonne in Paris, stunned many Friday when he blasted biofuels. Ziegler, who gave the remarks at a press conference at the U.N. headquarters in New York, posed dire predictions if the development of biofuels was to continue. His remarks follow a Thursday presentation to the U.N. General Assembly's human rights committee on the dangers of biofuels. He stated that blame for the record high price of some staple grain crops is directly attributable to biofuel initiatives. This much is factually accurate it appears. Between September 2006 and November 2006 corn prices rose 55 percent. Corn prices are at record highs of over $3 USD per bushel. The Wall Street Journal says this is largely due to the new industrial demand for corn for ethanol conversion. This has caused food producers such as Tyson to struggle.

Think Twice Before Imitating the Irish Miracle

Susie Long couldn't believe it. Sitting in the clinic, waiting for her dose of chemotherapy, she'd been making small talk with the wife of a fellow patient. The man's doctor had recommended a colonoscopy, and just three days later, he was having the procedure. That day, Susie finished her own treatment, went home and turned on the TV. The first commercial was from the Ministry of Health: Beat colon cancer with a timely colonoscopy! And that's when Susie Long lost it. She had waited seven months for her colonoscopy, and it came too late. Now she was 39 years old, and she was dying of colon cancer.

Susie sat down at the computer and wrote an e-mail to a popular radio host, a plainly eloquent rant about her health care odyssey. It immediately catapulted her onto the national stage, and for good reason.
