10 Things Your HMO Doctor Won't Tell You

ROSEMARY DUDLEY TRUSTED her HMO doctor. After all, she worked in his office as his nurse. So, in late 1997, when he told her a CAT scan showed no recurrence of the cancer she'd battled for two years, she believed him.

And she wasn't surprised when he insisted that a referral to a cancer specialist for the knot on her jaw wasn't necessary. Her health maintenance organization paid him thousands in bonuses for holding the line on such costs. .

Sarah Bush no-smoking policy kicks in Jan. 1

MATTOON — Neither on-duty Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center employees nor visitors to the hospital will be allowed to smoke at the site, starting at the first of the year, the hospital has announced. The decision coincides with a state law that goes into place Jan. 1 banning smoking in public places, with the announcement coming with today’s annual "Great American Smokeout," an American Cancer Society national event that promotes quitting smoking, SBLHC officials said.Employees have a small glass enclosure on the hospital’s north side in which they can smoke, and visitors are allowed to smoke outside entrances, said Patty Peterson, hospital spokeswoman. Both options will end Jan. 1, Peterson explained, and SBLHC officials wanted to give the public advance notice of the visitor smoking ban going into place. She said the employee ban will also apply to workers in their own vehicles who are away from SBLHC while traveling on hospital business.

Friday wild card

I felt like a proud papa watching his talented siblings go after one another. 'Tis extremely hard not to post or respond to comments. But it appears that Blogmeister Ken Paulman has things very well in hand. So, 'tis time to catch some Zzzzz's and prepare for my final -- I hope! -- day of painting. While I paint and sweat (do you think this is how Duane Hagadone paints his house?), you can use this Wild Card to start threads of your own. Also, remember, you can forward Ken links, questions, comments, photos, etc., for him to post here for you ...
