| Metastatic colorectal cancer - NICE: insufficient evidence to ...
The Appraisal Committee has prepared a Final Appraisal Determination on the use of Avastin and Erbitux in metastatic colorectal cancer and submitted it to the Institute. The main recommendations made are as follows: Avastin ( Bevacizumab ) in combination with 5-FluoroUracil plus Folinic Acid, with or without Irinotecan, is not recommended for the first-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. Erbitux ( Cetuximab ) in combination with Irinotecan is not recommended for the second-line or subsequent treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. People currently receiving Bevacizumab or Cetuximab should have the option to continue therapy until they and their consultants consider it appropriate to stop. The management of metastatic colorectal cancer is mainly palliative and involves a combination of treatments ( such as palliative surgery, chemotherapy and radiation ), symptom control and psychosocial support.
Overweight men with prostate cancer have a higher risk of dying
Men who are overweight when they have locally advanced prostate cancer have almost double the risk of dying from the disease compared with men of normal weight, new research says. The study, led by a team at Massachusetts General Hospital, is the first to find that excess weight alone is associated with deaths in men whose tumors had grown beyond the prostate or spread to lymph nodes, according to the study, which appears in the journal Cancer. "The prevalence of overweight and obesity continues to increase in United States, so its an issue that's perhaps more important than ever," author Dr. Matthew R. Smith said in an interview. "What we need to do from here are additional studies to understand the mechanisms by which overweight and obesity are associated with worse prostate cancer mortality." For men with a normal body mass index of 25, the death rate from prostate cancer was 6.5 percent after eight years.
REVIEW: I Am Legend offers a decent ride
We've seem Armageddon before, but nothing quite like this. A post-apocalyptic adventure that leaves all those massive, computer-generated scenes of falling buildings and devastation behind, I Am Legend doesn't merely focus on the end of civilization - it takes us on an existentialist quest to rediscover what it means to be human before our species expires. Certainly, wholesale extinction of Homo sapiens was the last thing the people of Earth expected from a cure for cancer, but from what we can piece together in the opening frames of this Francis Lawrence (Constantine) action thriller, a tumour-erasing treatment has a nasty side-effect: It changes humans into flesh-eating vampires. .

NEW YORK, Oct. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ImClone Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ: IMCL) and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE: BMY) today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an update to the ERBITUX(R) (Cetuximab) product labeling to include overall survival data as a single agent in epidermal growth factor inhibitor (EGFR)-expressing metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients after failure of both irinotecan- and oxaliplatin-based regimens. The approval of the supplemental biologics license application (sBLA) is based on prolonged overall survival from a large, randomized, multicenter, Phase III trial comparing ERBITUX plus best supportive care (BSC) to BSC alone in 572 EGFR-expressing mCRC patients after failure of irinotecan- and oxaliplatin-based regimens.

An abstract of the study is available online. Most Women Unaware of WHI Results, Survey Says Most women are unaware of the results from WHI studies that have found significant health risks associated with long-term hormone replacement therapy, according to a recently released survey, HealthDay/Washington Post reports (Doheny, HealthDay/Washington Post, 10/10). NIH researchers in July 2002 ended the WHI study on combination HRT three years early because they determined that the treatment might increase the risk for heart disease, invasive breast cancer and other health problems. A later WHI analysis, published in the April 4 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that HRT use among women in their 50s does not increase their risk for heart attack (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 9/17).
Smoking Before, After Pregnancy Harms Daughters' Fertility
WEDNESDAY, Nov. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers have identified the chemical pathway by which a mother's smoking before and after pregnancy might reduce her daughter's fertility by as much as two-thirds. Cigarette smoking during pregnancy has been shown in retrospective studies to affect the fertility of a woman's offspring, but this is the first study to offer an explanation of the biology behind the effect, the Canadian scientists claim. .
