Children’s cards warm the heart; new exhibit at Elizabethan

The images are heart-warming, the brightly-colored wreath, the multi-colored angel and the pure white snowman.

What makes the art on the fronts of these holiday cards more poignant is that it was done by pediatric patients from the Children’s Cancer Hospital at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Again this season, the Children’s Art Project is offering not only cards, but a variety of gift items all decorated with images by the young artists. The proceeds go to patient-focused programs such as summer camps, pediatric activities, the in-house education program and many other M.D. Anderson programs. The project was begun more than 30 years ago.

The choices are wide, from very whimsical to religious themes.

That comical snowman, complete with a carrot nose and red scarf, is by Carrington Marzett, a 17-year-old from Midland, Texas.

Everyone is different

We were recently having a family lunch at the Boardwalk at the PE beachfront. The baby room was shockingly disgusting! Firstly I had to wait with my crying baby at the room while a staff member was busy using the room. And oh boy, what a smell! The room had no chair to sit on to feed my baby and the changing area was a rock-hard ceramic top, badly designed so that if I had to change my baby her feet would dangle down. I had no choice but to feed the baby sitting on the countertop with the help of my sister and ended up changing the nappy in her pram. I was disgusted to say the least.

I too started off with Pampers thinking that the higher the price the better the product.

Top police officer warns that nuclear attack is inevitable

More than 300 experts from 70 countries were taking part in a high-level meeting organised by the UN International Atomic Energy Agency on the risks of nuclear terrorism.

The police response to a CBRN incident when it happened would have a "profound effect on our communities which should not be underestimated", he said. The protective clothing that officers would have to wear would look "terrifying".

As Dickinson made the point in his speech on Wednesday, one of his fellow police officers appeared dramatically on the stage dressed head to toe in a regulation black protection suit. With his face completely obscured by a gas mask, the officer then walked slowly through the delegates seated in the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

Decontamination after a radiation attack would be an "enormous cost", Dickinson contended.
