| Be Aware (Beware)
There is a strain of nativism, xenophobia, and small-mindedness in American life that is always there — often subdued, but never too far out of earshot. To call this our fascist streak would be absurdly melodramatic. Fascism proper was, above all, purposeful and orderly, while fear and loathing towards the “un-American" is often enough the woolliest form of baffled resentment: the effect of comfortable ignorance turning sour at any demand on its meager resources of attention and sympathy. This quality can subsist for long periods in a dormant or distracted state — expressing itself in muttering or small-scale acts of hostility, but nothing large-scale. Perhaps it is restrained by the better angels of our nature. But it means that the unscrupulous and the obtuse have a ready supply of raw material to mold into something vile when the occasion becomes available, or if there is some profit in it.
Cricket; Live over-by-over coverage of England v Sri Lanka, second ...
His first delivery finds a patch of rough outside Jayawradene's off stump and spits off the pitch, beating the outside edge of the bat and leaving everyone, commentators, fielders and batsman, gasping in mild shock. Unfortunately his second ball is short and wide and whumped thorugh point for four. 49th over: Sri Lanka 147-2 (Vandort 79 Jayawardene 56) Sanath Jayasuriya delivers a short paean to the glory of Ryan Sidebottom, and haven't there been moments in all our lives when we've felt like doing that. Vandort clumps a thick edge between slip and gully and away for our through thrid man. Again. Sidebottom grimaces, and in the crowd a cornet strikes up a rendition of Silent Night. I'm guessing it's Sidebottom who, in the absence of Flintoff and Gatting, gets roped in to dress up as Father Christmas at the England team seasonal get-togethers.
